SCOPE OF PRODUCTION ENGINEERING IN INDIA

I have written about production engineering in my previous post. First you have to understand the fact that production B.Tech is equivalent to mechanical B.Tech. So you can apply for mechanical job posts. May be you are worried because there is no news of job openings for production engineers in South India. This is because in south India, companies fill the posts for production engineers with mechanical engineers. This doesn't mean they do not take production engineers. It is just due to lack of production engineers. This is because there is just less colleges in south India which gives production B.Tech degree. But in north India companies need only production engineers to fill production posts. So scope is not less because you can fill both production and mechanical posts. Its best to get work experience of 2 years in a company and then try for a job abroad. The pay scale will be more and it is easy to get settled there.

Scope of production engineering is much more than you can think. Usually in multinational companies a production engineer controls a manufacturing department etc. That means mechanical engineers comes under a production engineer. Please don't misunderstand that a mechanical engineer is below a production engineer. It is just that a production engineer with high grade pay always comes top(in the management area).

There are lot of openings in different countries. Experience is the base of all.Try to get more experience, then job offers and pay scale increases. A few fields where production engineer get placed are :

  • Automobile companies- For inspection, quality control, operation of automated equipments etc.
  • Manufacturing industries- For inspection, quality control, operation of automated equipments, to control assembly line, production management etc.
  • Food processing industries- For inspection, quality control, Production management etc.
  • Railways- Manufacturing processes and its control etc.
  • Process industries.
  • Space and other research organizations.
  • Government and private companies.
  • Defense.
  • IT companies.
Each subject that you study during your course can get you a job and therefore focus a little on the concepts and during the course you will certainly love a subject or two. For example i fell in love with Industrial Automation and Inspection & Quality control. Therefore i understood what kind of jobs i should seek and so i searched and found a few companies relating to my interests. I kept visiting those sites to see notifications of job openings. One thing i understood is that you should have a good profile. Every student undergoes internship during their course and for you to be unique and to get an upper hand in placements its always better to do internship abroad during your engineering course. There are a lot of companies in India and around the world who hires production engineers.

I will mention a few companies who requires production engineer :
  1. NALCO
  2. SAIL
  3. TATA STEEL
  4. TCIL
  5. TATA MOTORS
  6. VOLVO
  7. SYNTHITE
  8. ONGC
  9. FACT
  10. ISRO
  11. AIRFORCE (TECHNICAL ENGINEER)
  12. HAL etc.
I haven't mentioned any IT companies because all IT companies take engineers( irrespective of their branch).  You can also go for higher studies to make your career firm. It is always beneficiary for a production engineer to opt MBA as his higher studies. I as a production engineer prefer MBA because we mainly get placed in production management etc. It is because unlike other branches production involves a lot of management. So MBA is going to help you a lot. Its better to get a work experience of 2 years in a manufacturing or core company and then go for MBA. If you have a work experience of 3 years in any manufacturing or core companies then you can also go for executive MBA which unlike other MBA's can be completed in 1 year( because of your work experience).

But If you are interested in the technical side so much then you can go for M.Tech. You should write GATE exam and obtain good score to do M.Tech in IIT's and NIT's in India. You also need good GATE score to get placed in core companies such as BHEL, SAIL, NTPC etc( Navaratna companies). But If you are going for M.Tech i highly recommend to do it in IIT's or NIT's. You can also do MS in India and abroad as well. M.Tech mainly consists of engineering while MS consists of engineering and research (a lot). The scope of doing MS abroad is so high(especially in Europe). The facility is great and the research over there is too good. The basic criteria to do MS abroad is write Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and get a good score. Next is English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL etc. Get atleast 6.5 out 9 to get admissions in  college abroad. To do MS in US or UK is too high its not easy to extend your visa after your course. But you can also do post graduation cheaply but with more value.

    1. Thank you very much... It is good that you chose production engineering. Well, both the above mentioned colleges comes under the same rank. If you want to know the Gujarat state rank of engineering colleges go to Gujarat state rank

    1. Both have scope and it depends on your interest. But i would recommend you to take designing engineering only if you are interested in designing, you already know a designing software and you do designing because unlike production engineering you don't have a choice to branch to different fields. If you end up being bad in designing then your scope is zero.

    1. I think you should go with option 2 ie continue college and do pipe designing course at Baroda. Even i studied in government engineering college and it is true that they don't teach much but you should learn yourself according to syllabus referring the books mentioned in the curriculum. Try to understand the concepts in depth. Its better to learn yourself than studying in private colleges where they spoon feed you. After passing out i am sure there are a lot of opportunities waiting you.

    1. You are taking a right decision, don't worry about that. production engineering has a lot of management and doing MBA is really going to help you form a good career. Are going to do an integrated course or planning to do MBA after B.Tech??
Operation management has a lot of scope, especially in multinational companies and the pay is very attractive.

    1. Wow... you have a good profile. After completing engineering you will have rise in your existing post and your work would be different and may be you will like it. But if you are looking for a white collar job, then you should certainly do MBA. Try to do MBA from the top 50 colleges in India. I guess top 75 is enough for you since you have a lot of experience.

    1. If you are really interested in automation and robotics try to do your mini project and main project on Robotics and try to do MS in robotics after engineering. There is a huge scope in Robotics but do MS in robotics from a good university.

  7. Hello, sir your article has motivated me a lot!
I have got admission in production engg. @ VJTI, mumbai!
So should i shift to civil or production only because sir i am worried about my job opportunities and pay and moreover is it realy similar to mechanical?

    1. Well decision is yours and it should depend on your taste. If you are really interested in mechanical then do opt production engineering because they are similar. I production engineering from Calicut university, Kerala and i got a mechanical equivalent certificate when i applied in the university.

    2. sir,but i think the VJTI is an Autonomous institute ,,,,,then how he will also get that equivalence certificate......??????

  9. sir,,what is the diff. between sandwich pattern and simple prod. engg.????

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't know If there is any college which provides production sandwich course. In sandwich course you do industrial training for half of your course and you do get experience certificate. I don't know much about it. Well i did simple production engineering of 4 years divided into 8 semesters. Every semester has 2 labs or workshops. You have to do a compulsory industrial training of atleast 2 weeks during your 3rd year and a main project during final year which can be done either in a company (external) or in your college workshop (internal).

  10. Hi sir ! I have completed B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with 5.85 CGPA. And my final semester project was done in manufacturing field... I dont know whether to choose production line or design... I had AutoCAD, PRO-E and ANSYS in my course and i have just a little bit of knowledge in it... I want to know which has better scope...any other suggestions are welcome... And 1 more thing i would like to tell is that i just have a bit of knowledge in subjects i studied since i did it just for passing exams and getting a degree... I regret a lot now.... Do u think i have any future as a mechanical engineer ?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Almost all freshers know only a little about the subjects they have studied. Text book knowledge and real workshop experience is completely different. You are an engineer now and if you think that a fresher with 8 CGPA is above you, then you are mistaken. I have seen a lot of 8 and 9 pointers who couldn't perform well in work or interviews. You have to decide your field according to your taste and ofcourse you have a future as a mechanical engineer. Well go to interviews and lets see which lucky company gets you.
Well my suggestion will be MBA. I think you will do good with an MBA.

    1. Always your first company has a lot of importance in your future career. One should always stay a minimum of 2 years( 3 years is better) in your first company but at the same time staying longer in your first company will affect your growth.
Now is the best time to do MBA. 3 years experience with an MBA is going to get you a job with a minimum package of 5 lakhs p.a. While looking for an MBA you should make sure that you get into a good college and always have a look at their placement record which you can easily access from their website.

    1. As you know production engineering is similar to mechanical engineering. If you are genuinely interested in mechanical you should definitely go for it. Ease and difficulty of the course depends on your taste.
There are few subjects that are related to physics but I am sure that you will easily catchup.

  16. Sir i read from your article that you did production engg from calicut University. I am also from kerala. I completed diploma in mechanical engineering and secured a seat at TKM kollam for production engineering. Is it going to worth it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ofcourse it is worth it. Now you have strong technical knowledge after doing B.tech you will learn management too. It is always better to do production engineering because then you will have a steady growth career wise and there is a huge gap between an engineer and diploma person when it comes to shop floor because an engineer will be managing all the diploma people.
