WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU SCORE LOW RANK IN ENGINEERING

Twelfth grade is one of the most crucial stage in any teenager's life. What you become or what you make of life depends, to a large extent, on how much you score for the final Board exam or the entrance for that matter. But mostly, children nowadays decide their future much before their senior secondary studies and they dedicate their youthful days to various entrance coaching institutes that have mottos "eat, study, repeat". And yet even after such gruesome trainings, not all who attempt the entrance exams are lucky enough to clear it. Now here are some suggestions on what you can do If you attempted an engineering entrance exam bu couldn't score as expected.

In this context, the first thing you need to understand is that just because you have a science background, engineering or medicine is not what you must do. The job that you take up should give you satisfaction and happiness. Follow your passion and not what others tell you to do. Only If you're sure that being an engineer is exactly what you want, need you read the rest this article. Otherwise there are countless other options that you could choose according to your aptitude.

Now presuming that engineering is indeed your genre and you really want nothing but this, don't loose heart If you don't manage to come out in flying colours in the entrance exam. Here are some of the things you can do-

1.REPEAT THE EXAM: Since the time of its inception, the Central Entrance Exam Board allows multiple attempts at the exam. Repeating the entrance, they call it. I would personally suggest you to join any good coaching institute when you repeat, because the one year you would want to be focused, kept apace on the right track and determined. Self-study might not give you enough momentum nor will you know how well your performance is compared to other repeaters. And when you repeat, then go for it with your heart and soul. Don't let any negatives deter you from reaching our goal. Work hard the second time so that success cannot escape from your gasp.

2.JOIN PRIVATE COLLEGES: If you do not wish to lose one year of your life corresponding to your friends, there are numerous private funded colleges that offer seats at not so high fee rates. However in most private colleges, there are more seats available than there are students willing to join, so before you join, try to get in touch with any acquaintances who'd studied there or is currently studying and a thorough enquiry should be made into the college's past placement statistics, which gives you a first hand idea about the quality of education provided. Searching and connecting with the alumni of the college will also help in deciding. If you have any relatives or friends working in prospectus companies that hire engineers, it could give you a hold onto being recruited to the same company when internship or job offers are at stake.

3.OTHER STATE ENTRANCES: The Entrance exams of other states offer a marginal quota for non-native students. For example, you can apply for the states of Maharashtra or Karnataka easily, though the syllabus for the former has been found to be harder than Kerala syllabus. However, Karnataka conducts an entrance exam called ComedK (for  both Medical and Engineering degrees including Architecture). In ComedK, all you need to do is get your name enlisted on the rank-list( even If it is low). That assures a seat in one of Karnataka's colleges with affordable fees.

4.OTHER BRANCHES AND OPTIONS: Another suggestion I will make is that you should be aware of all the different streams or trades that are being offered by various colleges. Don't be blindfolded by the misconception that only the 3 basic branches of Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering are worthwhile. Newer trends have emerged in technology which has given rise to several less obvious branches that are slowly gaining popularity. Some such recent innovative branches are


5.NON-PROFESSIONAL DEGREES: Another way you can achieve the long term goal of being an engineer is by doing a Bachelors in your suitable fields like Software design, Computer science, Biotechnology or even Physics and later applying for a Masters using GRE (Graduate Record Examination) to study MS/M.Tech in foreign countries that offer ample oppurtunites for research and exposure to global education standards. Cracking the GRE with Adequate scores can win you scholarships from the world acclaimed universities in UK, US and Europe. In India, you can also do integrated BS-MS or dual degree programs which gets you a Bachelors-cum-Masters degree in 5 years. Lately there is an unprecedented trend visible in the IT companies like Wipro hiring graduates of such tech-related non-professional degrees each year in mass numbers.

6.BACHELORS DEGREE ABROAD: Instead of waiting to complete the undergraduate programs in India, to move abroad for further studies, some countries like Singapore and France offer scholarship to meritorious students who've scored well in their AISSE or equivalent twelfth grade board exam to pursue the course of their preference in those countries. Scholarships like ASEAN or SIA provide full financial assistance in order to cover the expenses of college, accommodation and food. You must keep track of the websites of these foreign universities and also the government websites of those countries. For such courses you can avail educational loans from banks with subsidized rates.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS

If anyone out there is thinking for a course like Diploma or ITI rather than Engineering, here is a piece of advise for you. Now a days almost everyone opt engineering course and the competition level for jobs are increasing. We have reached to a stage where even engineers without higher studies have no value. So why do you have to think of opting a course below Engineering. Let me tell you my experience- Myself after completing Engineering got job with a pay of 30,000 per month but at the same time diploma graduates will only get 12,000 per month. That means I am getting more than twice his salary and it will take a minimum of 5 years for him to reach my level. But is he really reaching my level? He will reach my level If I have no growth or If my salary remains the same. By the time he gets 30,000 per month, I will be getting a pay of 60,000 per month. The amount of increment or increase in pay per year will also be different for an Engineer and Diploma holder. That means there is huge gap between an Engineering graduate and a diploma graduate in every sense like pay, increase in pay, value, position, etc.

But still why do students opt Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, etc rather than Engineering. There are two possibilities which I have felt is the reason for this. The first possibility is the duration of course and students desire to enter a job and earn money as soon as possible. Diploma is a 3 year course where as Engineering is a 4 year course. And so many join Diploma, so they can finish their course fast and earn money but trust me after joining a company they regret a lot for not doing Engineering because they always have to work under an Engineer. The second possibility is the affordability of expense for Engineering. Since the fee is too much compared to Diploma many students limit their career with a Diploma course.

Well money is not a problem anymore because you can apply for scholarships and can get up to 3,00,000 per year. There are a lot of institutions and foundations who provides scholarships to students who has a strong desire to study. Scholarship preference are for students with low family income (with minimum marks of 60%) and for students with average family income who has achieved excellent marks for their 10th and 12th. Preferences are also given to outstanding students who has got prizes in dance, music, athletics, etc in the state level competition. Now a days almost all private colleges give scholarships for students with excellent marks. Scholarships are also given to minority students in India. But the problem is that the scholarship gets cancelled If you fail in any subject during your course. So try to get an average mark every semester and maintain it so that your scholarship is active for your entire course.

Everyone are searching for Engineering scholarships but the number of scholarships offered are limited. Be careful while applying for scholarships because there are a lot of fake internet sites which tells you to pay a registration fee. So be alert and don't fall into any fake internet traps. Even though Engineering scholarships are hard to get due to the rush of application forms from all over the country, do apply for the same because you might get lucky. An Engineering scholarship will change your life in all ways and you don't have to depend on anyone for your studies.

The subjects may vary from university to university. This semester is a little easy compared to the syllabus of fourth semester. Industrial Automation is very interesting and important subject because these days almost all companies are making their systems and machines automated. Try to understand the subject in depth and also try to a research on a specific topic of automation according to your interest. Labs are easy compared to fourth semester. In fifth semester you can choose an elective subject from a list of subjects such as Automotive Engineering, Robotics and Robot Applications, Rapid Prototyping and Tooling, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Vision, etc. In sixth semester, there will be CAD/CAM Lab and they will teach you a particular designing software (designing software vary from university to university). For my lab it was PRO-E. And the most important thing in your third year is mini project.

There are a lot of important things that you should do during your third year. First, try to join for any certified course that is going to help you in interviews and career. If you are interested in designing, then you can join for courses like PRO-E, SOLID WORKS, CATIA, ANSYS, etc. Many students do engineering just to get a job in any sector (IT, Core, Banks, etc). They can do any programming courses like C, JAVA, etc or can go for IBPS (bank test) coaching. Make sure all these courses have a certificate which is acceptable throughout he world. Second, if you decided to go for higher studies (MBA, MS, M.Tech, etc), then you can join for coaching classes. Third year is the right time to join for such classes. Third thing to do is apply for internships. You can do internships ranging from a period of two weeks to 3 months. You can also do internship abroad during your engineering course. Final step is to make your mini project a huge success.

The subjects may vary a little from university to university. Second year is the toughest year to study. To be specific fourth semester is the toughest semester of the entire course with all the core subjects clubbed together. Introduction of core subjects starts from third semester. Electrical Drives and Automation can be a bit difficult for students who have no base in physics/electrical. If you have understood Engineering Graphics during first year, then Production Engineering Drawing/Machine Drawing will be easy. In fourth semester, Electrical and Electronics Lab will be very difficult. Only relief in fourth semester is Environmental Science. If you have passed fourth semester, it is like passing the entire course.

Try to take seminars whenever possible and do try to take part in paper presentation competitions. Inquire about all courses available for higher studies like MS, M.Tech, MBA, etc. You might or might not go for higher studies after your course but knowing your interest (either management or technical) is very important. Always do paper presentations according to that interest. If in the end you do decide to go for higher studies, these paper presentations will certainly help you. Next important thing is to start thinking about topics for your mini project which has to be done during third year and about main project which has to be done during fourth year. Always try to do projects according to your higher studies interest. For example, if you are interested in doing MS in Robotics, try to do your paper presentations on Robotics and try to select a topic related to Robotics for mini project and main project. The selection process for MS is becoming tougher because there is a rush towards MS and having done paper presentations and projects on the course is certainly going to give you an upper hand.

The subjects are almost same for all branches during first year with slight variations from university to university. This year is the easiest year to study because you are familiar with all the subjects (except one or two) and its syllabus. The only problem is that you get a lot of assignments and a lot of workshop/lab record work to complete. It becomes a burden when you keep it till the end. But apart from that you have plenty of time compared to other semesters. You have a lot of time to make friends, take part in activities such as cultural, sports, etc. But this year is the year when you can develop your confidence, management skills, conquer stage fears, handle situations, work under pressure, etc. If you are weak in all these then you should focus in developing such qualities otherwise it is very difficult to get a job because a company is looking for a person with all these qualities. Now the best thing to do to develop such qualities is to take part in Technical Fests that are conducted in various in various colleges. You might be shy to take part in your own college, so it is better to take part in fests that come about in other colleges. The events like Best Manager, Mr.Tech fest, etc helps you in understanding the standard of other students, your weakness, where you have to improve, etc. It is not about winning or losing. it is all about understanding and developing. During the first year you should also try to develop your interest towards your course. There might be students who might be having no idea about computer programming in C because they didn't choose it in higher secondary school. So I advice all those students who are weak in C programming to get an idea about it by referring a book or by going for a C program course. Engineering Graphics is all about concepts, visualizing or imagining an object in three dimensional planes and drawing its different views on paper. Some students find it hard to understand, so I recommend those students to understand the basics of Engineering Graphics before joining for engineering.

CAN PRODUCTION ENGINEERS APPLY FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING JOBS IN GOVERNMENT SECTOR?

As I have told you before, production engineering is similar to mechanical engineering and therefore production engineers can apply for mechanical jobs in government sector. In government sector there are jobs specifically for production engineers and I understood that there is a huge scope and demand for production engineers even in government sector.

I will tell you my experience- During my final year of production engineering I registered in many government sites such as Public Service Commission (PSC), Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Railways, Air force, Navy etc. During registration i had to fill a lot of online forms such as contact details, family details, educational qualification, upload photo with name and date, upload signature, etc. In qualification form they ask about our highest qualification and I typed B.Tech (B.E) and there is a scroll down option for selecting your branch in which production or mechanical production engineering is available for selection. After registration I received a lot of notifications for recruitment exclusively for production engineers and understood that there is a lot of requirement or demand for production engineers. I even applied for jobs requiring mechanical engineers but there was a notification telling that I am not eligible. Now here comes the benefit of mechanical equivalent certificate. You can say that you are eligible for the desired mechanical engineer post and there is an option for selecting mechanical equivalent certificate. In some cases they tell you to select a minimum number of 10-15 subjects that you have studied from the given list of mechanical subjects (which I am sure we would have studied during our course). In Air force registration, they ask you to select subjects from the given list.

It is an advantage for us that we can apply for production jobs as well as mechanical government jobs.

MECHANICAL EQUIVALENT CERTIFICATE FOR PRODUCTION ENGINEERS

First of all let me assure all that production engineering is not lower compared to mechanical engineering. Every student is scared to opt production engineering because they haven't heard of production engineers. This is because in the beginning there was only mechanical engineering and the importance of production and industrial engineering came in the later stage. Hence only few colleges teach production engineering and its importance is growing every year. Many companies including companies abroad specify their requirement for production engineers and its scope is huge.

I have stated in my previous posts that production engineering is similar to mechanical engineering and I have mentioned about mechanical equivalent certificate for production engineers. In the comments of my previous posts I saw that students have doubt whether all colleges teaching production engineering provide the equivalency certificate. Well according to my view point all universities should provide a mechanical equivalency certificate and if I am wrong may be it depends on the university (whether autonomous or not) and their syllabus. In different universities the syllabus for production engineering differs. In certain university the syllabus might be 90% similar to mechanical engineering while in certain university the degree of similarity might be 60% and the universities provide equivalency certificate according to the degree of similarity. For example I did production engineering from Calicut university and I got mechanical equivalent certificate. Calicut university provides mechanical equivalent certificate because its syllabus is more than 85% similar (just 4 subjects and 2 labs different) to mechanical engineering.

Now the truth is that I have never used my mechanical equivalent certificate for any interviews because in the registration form or online form there was always slot for production engineers whether the company was IT or manufacturing based. But it comes to use while applying for mechanical jobs through Public Service Commission (PSC), UPSC, Railways etc.

Important- Always inquire your respective universities rather than your college about equivalent certificate. Your college might or might not know about equivalent certificate because after course you have to go to your university (not your college) and apply for the same.

SCOPE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING INDIA

Engineering is one of the most important fields in the world today; and civil engineering is the one that is at the foremost and can get you a job easily. It is the oldest branch which is still one of the relevant ones. With new buildings springing up every day, there are scores of jobs for civil engineers- graduates fresh and experienced alike, can easily find a job that is to their liking. Therefore, it is not hard to believe the high demand to join for a civil engineering course today. The job aspects come from small contractors to large ones; government agencies such as PWD, etc; consultancies and what not. The top companies include Shapoorji & Pallonji, Shobha Developers, L&T, DLF; and the list is endless. The fact i understood is that ones profile must be good. Every student undergoes internship during their course and for you to be outstanding and to get an upper hand in placements it is always better to do internship abroad during your engineering course.

Most people consider civil engineering to be about building skyscrapers and bridges. But it is not that alone. It is one of the vastest subjects today and include so may aspects and specializations to it. It is not called the mother of engineering just for the heck of it.

One of the most common aspects would be construction engineering and management; in which everything regarding construction is dealt with. Various management techniques and how it is carried out are addressed. This is the aspect that people are most familiar with. People are used to civil engineers hard in hard hats holding various drawings and leading construction teams.

Structural engineering is the facet of civil engineering that has made the skyscrapers possible. Structural engineers make sure that all the elements of a building, dam, or any such structure, are strong enough to do the designated work. Transportation engineering is the part in which road design and traffic analysis are done. It is where all the basic planning for the country's transport system is done. Geotechnical engineering deals with soil and rock, and how they affect construction, and it also deals with landscaping and ground improvement. Geotechnical engineering also is used to help design and maintain tunnels and underground structures. Water resources engineering is another aspect of civil engineering which is gaining importance. It deals with anything and everything related to water. Environmental engineering has come into huge importance today due to lack of waste management and their affects on the environment.

It is no wonder that the need for civil engineers has grown considerably in the last few years thanks to the growing needs of the present generation. The scope of civil engineering is vast; with so many specializations to choose from and so many jobs to pick from. And the oldest branch is not going to go out of fashion any time soon...

You can also go for higher studies such as M.Tech or MS to make your career firm. But If you are going for M.Tech i highly recommend to do it in IIT's and NIT's. You can also do MS in India and abroad as well. M.Tech mainly consists of engineering while MS consists of engineering and research (a lot). The scope of doing MS abroad is so high (especially in Europe). The facility is great and the research over there is too good. The basic criteria to do MS abroad is writing Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and get a good score. Next is English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL etc. Get atleast 6.5 out of 9 to get admission in colleges abroad. To do MS is US or Uk is too high and it is not easy to extend your visa after your course. But you can also do post graduation cheaply but with more value.

SCOPE OF COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING

For those of you who are still confused about your aptitude and would prefer to go with a course that has better options and opportunities in comparison with others, here is a guide on computer science, which I believe is the field for both tomorrow and today. Now this aspect is quite important as certain courses that offer high potential for the future may not have developed up to par at the present and vice versa. I think Computer Science is the best course for 2014.

How does one sense that he/she has an aptitude for Computer Science? The first and foremost point to be kept in mind is that Computer Science is a breed of science that constitutes of numerous fields and areas within which one can prosper and master. In a student point of view, ranging from gaming graphical designing, applications programming, web development, embedded systems, etc are a handful among a pool. So your aptitude might be in compliance with one field or another, no need to worry. Generally If you are good at logic, you love to solve mind-boggling problems, Computer Science is waiting for you. But then, most kids nowadays are acquainted with a computer from school days itself. Hence it is an easy process to locate the aptitude in Computer Science. Kids who play with software often end up in a Computer Science classroom (or in a start-up in Silicon Valley!).

Once you have opted for Computer Science, the foremost point to be remembered is staying updated is the most difficult yet important virtue here. One should make sure that he/she is getting to know the recent developments and innovations happening around in their area. It is equally important that one starts to experiment with his/her personal computer. What is being taught in a classroom is probably less important when compared to the knowledge you are supposed to gather from parallel sources like internet, during the course time. It is a pressing issue that it is high time that our universities start to rebuild their curriculum, as in most institutions the courses are way more than outdated. In this scenario it becomes far more important that one starts to learn current gadgets from the web. The fact I understood is that one's profile should be good. Every student undergoes internships during their course and for you to get an upper hand in placements it is always better to do internships abroad during your engineering course.

Computer Science offers a variety of options and opportunities on course completion. The obvious option of getting employed in software sector is quite alive, as more and more opportunities are getting created on a regular basis. Apart from that, computer science enthusiasts and graduates are also placed in a variety of sectors including Information Technology,  System Administration and Banking. The option that I would like to stress here is about getting into having a start-up as in numerous cases proved to be the path breaking decision. Students are more into doing their own work, realizing their own visions and build their own enterprise rather than getting employed in a pre-established firm. It seems as our youngsters are getting to like the risk and passion involved in the process. Besides, the technical/programming skills that one possesses also accommodate the opportunities to work while students, providing a good deal of pocket money and invaluable experience alongside. Moreover, it is quite evident that the end of computer era is not likely to happen in the near/distant future as computers are only being replaced by better computers. A computer professional hence only need to get involved with the evolving technology and he has a place somewhere in the corporate framework.

The initial pay and the increase in pay over the years for computer science engineers are too high and attractive compared with other engineers working in core companies such as manufacturing, automobile, etc. To sum up, Computer Science is a demanding yet fruitful course that returns multiple times the result for the effort to put in. Just get to love these immensely powerful yet friendly machines and they are sure to safeguard your future once and ever.

WHAT IS CHEMICAL ENGINEERING?

Chemical engineering is the application of the principles of physical sciences together with the principles of economics and human relations to fields that pertain directly to processes and process equipments in which matter is treated to effect a change of state, energy content or composition. In Layman words it is concerned with the transformation of raw materials into useful products making use of chemical conversions and physical operations. The chemical engineers use the technologies developed by the chemists in laboratories for the commercial production of a wide variety of materials. Chemical engineers must develop, design and engineer both the complete process and the equipment used, choose the proper raw materials, operate the plant efficiently, safely and economically and see that the products are up to the standards of the consumers.

Chemical engineering is not chemistry alone. Along with chemistry a sound knowledge mechanics, physics and mathematics are must. A +2 student opting chemical engineering must have a good aptitude for solving problems. He or she must have a good base in stoichiometry (a must), kinetics and physics. Along with the knowledge the students should take it as their career option if they have an interest towards it or else the subjects become quite dry. Some of the main subjects that students have to learn during the course are stoichiometry and process calculations, heat transfer operations, mass transfer operations, chemical reaction engineering, chemical thermodynamics, process design, process control system, optimization etc. During the course we can see many subjects that we have in common with mechanical engineering. But the major difference is that we are more interested in the reactions that takes place inside the reactors, the conversion yields etc. A common fear that the work conditions of chemical engineers are hazardous is a fluke. We are the top paid when compared with the pass outs of other branches and lately there has been a boom in this field and placements are sure. But first you should know what chemical engineering is because students have a misconception about it. A common fear that the work conditions of chemical engineers are hazardous is a fluke. Chemical engineers work in safe environment and direct contact with chemicals is minimum. Chemical engineers in India recruited in many sectors. You can also go for higher studies to make your career firm. The undergraduates can take M.Tech or MS in various fields and courses are offered in various IIT's and NIT's in India. The topics being : environmental engineering, piping and design, nanotechnology, metallurgy, chemical engineering etc. The students can also take up research options in their interested fields and earn while pursuing their course. You need to write GATE to get into IIT's and NIT's. The companies these days consider GATE score too for recruitment and therefore preparing for GATE is very important. You can also do MS in India and abroad as well. The students can take up research options in their interested field and earn while pursuing their course. The basic criteria to do MS abroad is write Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and get a good score. Next is English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL etc. Get atleast 6.5 out 9 to get admissions in  college abroad. To do MS in US or UK is too high its not easy to extend your visa after your course. But you can also do post graduation cheaply but with more value

WHAT IS PRODUCTION ENGINEERING?

Have you ever been to a factory or industry? Have you seen a factory or industry in television? Have you ever thought how the whole system works efficiently? Who has planned and implemented the whole system, selected the technology, machines and the amount of materials? Well the answer is production engineer. Without a production engineer a company may never operate efficiently. An entire production cycle consists of planning, procurement of materials, managing, manufacturing, distribution and sales. A production engineer plays a major role in all sections except distribution and sales.

Production engineering is some what similar to mechanical engineering. Almost half the subjects are same for both courses. The difference is that production engineering has an upper hand in management side and manufacturing side. Manufacturing subjects gives you knowledge about machining processes (milling, drilling etc), joining processes (welding, soldering etc), castings (die, sand etc), metal cutting and tool design, machine tools, automation, assembly lines, jigs and fixtures etc. Management subjects makes you strong in ergonomics, manufacturing management, materials management, production planning etc. And therefore production engineering is a combination of manufacturing technology and management techniques. During your engineering course, final semesters mainly consists of management subjects. You can get mechanical equivalent certificate by just writing a test.

SCOPE OF PRODUCTION ENGINEERING


I hope everyone knows about production engineering. In the present era scope of production engineer is huge. Everyone are confused about the course to opt. Usually in multinational companies a production engineer controls a manufacturing department etc. That means mechanical engineers comes under a production engineer. Please don't misunderstand that a mechanical engineer is below a production engineer. It is just that a production engineer with high grade pay always comes top (in the management area). In my view point a company cannot run smoothly without the help of production engineers because these engineers deal with everything starting from procurement of raw materials to the processes involved till it reach the market. 

There are lot of openings in different countries. Experience is the base of all. Try to get more experience, then job offers and pay scale increases. A few fields where production engineer get placed are :


  • Automobile companies- For inspection, quality control, operation of automated equipments etc.
  • Manufacturing industries- For inspection, quality control, operation of automated equipments, to control assembly line, production management etc.
  • Food processing industries- For inspection, quality control, Production management etc.
  • Railways- Manufacturing processes and its control etc.
  • Process industries.
  • Space and other research organizations.
  • Government and private companies.
  • Defense.
  • IT companies.

During the course students fall in love with a subject or two that helps them to understand their taste. For example i fell in love with Industrial Automation and Inspection & Quality control. Therefore i understood specific jobs i should seek and i searched and found a few companies to my interests. I kept visiting those sites to see notifications of job openings. The fact i understood is that one's profile should be good. Every student undergoes internship during their course and for you to be outstanding and to get an upper hand in placements it is always better to do internship abroad during your engineering course

You can also go for higher studies to make your career firm. It is always beneficiary for a production engineer to opt MBA as his higher studies. I as a production engineer prefer MBA because we mainly get placed in production management etc. It is because unlike other branches production engineering involves management. MBA is going to help you a lot. It is better to get a work experience of 2 years in a manufacturing or core company and then go for MBA. If you have a work experience of 3 years in any manufacturing or core companies then you can also go for executive MBA that unlike other MBA's can be completed in 1 year( because of your work experience).

And for those who want to do post graduation in the technical side it is better to do MS abroad in good colleges. The scope of doing MS abroad is too high(especially in Europe). The facility is great and the research is too good. The necessary criteria to do MS abroad is write Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and get a good score. Next is English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL etc. Get at least 6.5 out 9 to get admissions in  college abroad. You can also do post graduation cheaply but with more value. In India graduates who are interested in research go for M.Tech. But i highly recommend NIT's or IIT's for M.Tech.

WHAT IS BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING??

  I know many students who love biology and took bio-maths during their high school. But unfortunately because of financial problems couldn't opt medicine because the tuition fee for medicine is too high compared with engineering unless you get scholarship through entrance examination. Well If you still have that desire but you are opting engineering then this is the right course for you.

Bio-medical engineering is among different courses of engineering. It is basically engineering in medicine. The statistics of course is 75% electronics and 25% medicine. Bio-medical engineer deals with the sales and services of medical equipments and developing health care devices and procedures that has a solution to medical and health problems by combining engineering principles and techniques in medicine field and biology.   What is its scope??

What is bio-medical engineering? What is its scope? You know that a bio-medical engineer deals with the sales and services of medical equipments. There will be a huge scope in bio-medical engineering until no hospitals are functional. If you are a little business minded you can make a huge profit in the sales section of medical equipments. My friend worked as a salesman for 2 months. Now he started his own business of distributing. He is making a huge profit. 

Bio-medical engineers are employed in industries, hospitals, research faculties of educational and medical institutes, in teaching, and in government regulatory agencies.You have a lot of scope in the servicing section because now a days it is hard to find engineers for servicing. Just imagine a country and imagine many hospitals, dental clinics, health clinics etc. Nothing functions without medical equipments. And every equipments need periodic servicing.

Bio- medical engineers are also required in all medical clinics and hospitals for routine and breakdown maintenance. The work that comes under this are acceptance testing, maintenance planning, risk analysis,routine calibration, preventive maintenance, repairs, maintaining inventory of spare parts etc. The other works are design, development and research of devices, technologies etc. This includes modifying the existing equipment, software development, networking etc.
            
If you are interested in the research field, that too is good because everyone are trying to invent medical equipments that are flexible, reliable and simple to use. The fact i understood is that one's profile should be good. Every student undergoes internship during their course and for you to be outstanding and to get an upper hand in placements it is always better to do internship abroad during your engineering course. You can also go for higher studies such as MBA, MS or M.Tech. If you are planning to go for sales and services it is better to go for MBA. WHAT IS ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING?

In school did you have a liking towards resistors, transistors, diodes in physics lab. Did you ever have a liking towards chips of computers or other electronic device or mainly did you have a liking towards electronic devices. Have you ever  wondered who configures a television or a computer. Due you wish to know more about different forms of communication , robotics, signal processing etc then electronics and communication is the right course for you.
  
Electronics and communication or EC is a branch of engineering which deals with study of electronic equipments which we use in our daily life and about communication such as radio, mobile etc. The content is more in the communication side than the electronics side. An electronics engineer deals with the fabrication of IC's and its components such as resistors, transistors etc. I will explain with an example the difference between an electrical engineer and an electronic engineer. An electrical engineer does the wiring of a television but it is an EC engineer who configures the television. I hope you understood the difference.
     
Almost all EC students tells that EC is a dry course full of theory. My EC batch-mates told me the same thing and i don't see them out of their classrooms. The syllabus is pretty difficult compared to other branches. The syllabus has a lot of maths, a bulk of equations, a lot of programming etc and so if you are not good in maths or equations then this is definitely not the course for you. Each semester has atleast 1 lab and i have heard that the lab exams are difficult (depends on the college). I have seen my friends disappointed after lab exams and they say that they didn't get the output result. I am saying all this because a lot of students take courses just because there is a vacant seat. Take this course only if you like electronics. If you are interested then i don't think the course going to be that difficult.  What is its scope??

SCOPE OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

What is electronics and communication engineering? What is its scope? Scope of electronics and communication engineering or EC engineering is huge because modern technology uses electronics, chips, transistors, fibre optics etc and you know that an EC engineer deals with all of these. Scope of EC engineering is vast that it is applied in every field. The development of the world that includes every area such as telecommunication, satellite, microelectronics, technology etc are all based on electronics engineering. Electronics has also helped in developing health care, automation, signal processing etc. 

Few fields where electronic engineers get placed are :


  • In medical field- Almost all medical equipments are electronic and hence for the installation and maintenance of those equipments.
  • In automobile- The speed dial, air bag systems etc are all based on electronics.
  • In modern equipments- For the production, maintenance and repair of computers, laptops,  tabs, mobiles etc.
  • In communication- Radio,telephones etc.
  • In government and private companies- Installation, operation and maintenance of electronics equipments and systems.
  • Defence- For design and development of complex devices and systems for signal processing and telecommunication.
  • Space and other research organisations- For design and development of complex devices and systems for signal processing and telecommunication.
  • Electronic industries- Design and fabrication of devices, embedded systems, electronic equipments etc. 
  • Process industries- For instrumentation and control of electronic devices.
  • IT companies- Well preferred as IT professionals.
  • Manufacturing- PCB, IC etc.

A lot of EC students end up in software companies. During one's course try to understand the concepts and go in depth that will help you get into a core company. The fact i understood is that one's profile should be good. Every student undergoes internship during their course and for you to be outstanding and to get an upper hand in placements it is always better to do internship abroad during your engineering course In India many companies hire EC engineers. Try to go for multinational companies if possible. You can get into these companies if you have a good profile and always visit their official sites for any notifications for vacancies.

WHAT IS AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING?

During childhood everyone would have ran out of your house to glance up the sky to see an airplane or helicopter as soon as you hear its sound. You must have thought how this thing is flying as a bird or who made this thing. You might have thought of making an airplane and might have made with a paper. You might have bought a flying plane that is operated by a remote controller. You would have opened the toy just to know how it works. Well, If you still desire to make an airplane and If you wish to open a real airplane to know its mechanism aeronautical engineering is the right course for you.

Aeronautical engineering is the study of how plane (all kinds) fly within the earths atmosphere and to apply all that knowledge to design, build parts and to assemble them into aircrafts and also missiles. Mainly aeronautical engineering teaches about aerodynamics (effect of air on solid bodies), avionics (design of aircrafts), propulsion (force required for flying a body), material science (selecting light material that can withstand large amount of force), structural analysis (for stability) and manufacturing (techniques).

Development and manufacturing of a modern or a new flight is a too complex and expensive process. For that you should have knowledge in this field, must be skillful, creative and should know about latest flight technologies. Main areas of focus are testing, maintenance of aircrafts and missiles, fuel and system analysis, dangers of aircrafts, its effect on environment etc. You should be good in maths and you have to study electronics, software design, risk analysis etc.

I will mention the subjects  (not all) that you have to study during the course- Material Science and Engineering, Thermodynamics, Manufacturing Processes, Advanced engineering mathematics, Instrumentation and Control Engineering. Fluid Mechanics, Theory of Machines, Aircraft Materials, Machine Design, Vibration Engineering, Heat Transfer, Aircraft System, Aircraft Structure, Propulsion, Reliability and Maintenance Engineering, Fatigue and Fracture, Total Quality Management, Aerodynamics, Aircraft Design, Maintenance of Power Plant System, Helicopter Theory, Aircraft Communication and Navigation, Civil Aviation and Regulation, etc. I have written previously on scope of aeronautical engineering.

SCOPE OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING

A few people have a misconception about aeronautical engineering. "Will i be able to fly an airplane one day?" will be the first thing a student who is planning to join a UG course thinks. He/she will ask someone about the doubt and the person explains that there are not many opportunities because there are many pilots these days. Well the truth is that you become an aeronautical engineer after the course and not a pilot. Well to be a pilot you should join a flying/aviation center and get a flying license (can do after school).

A lot of companies hire aeronautical engineers to do the following work
  • For the construction of aircrafts
  • For the testing purposes such as efficiency testing, flight testing etc
  • For the design purposes such as airframe design, engine design etc
  • For the maintenance of aircrafts
  • For the functioning of aircrafts
  • For the manufacturing of aircrafts
  • For investigation purposes such as airplane crashes, impact on environment etc
  • As flight controllers or air traffic controllers.
The companies that hire aeronautical engineers are commercial aviation companies, space research agencies, civil aviation, research centers (industrial, government and academic). Many jobs are available in United States of America, Europe, Gulf etc. The job of an aeronautical engineer is prestigious and the pay is too good. I am sure that it is the dream of every engineers to get into NASA. Well this course is one of the pathways to NASA. Try to join the top colleges if possible. Its best to join colleges that also gives training in flying a n airplane. You can also go for higher studies to get more knowledge and to increase your pay and chances of getting into top companies of the world. You can also do post graduation cheaply but with more value.
